Sea&Soil has a range of beneficial ingredients, which we are about to explain below. It will give you an insight into the rationale behind using them and what benefits should you expect from them.
A common brown alga (Phaeophyceae, in the family Fucaceae, the only species in genus Ascophyllum), growing predominantly in the northern Atlantic Ocean, also known as rockweed, Norwegian kelp, knotted kelp, knotted wrack or egg wrack. It is common in the North-Western Europe (from Svalbard to Portugal), Greenland, North-Eastern coast of North America. The Ascophyllum nodosum used in our supplement is sourced from the Scottish Outer Hebrides and is the highest of Seagreens® species in terms of iodine levels — 700mcg iodine per 1g.
Ascophyllum nodosum is harvested for human consumption, as well as for use in alginates, fertilisers and other manufacturing processes. Due to its combination of macro-nutrients (nitrogen, phosphporus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulphur) and micro-nutrients such as manganese, copper, iron, zinc but also cytokins, betaines, mannitol, organic acids, amino acids and proteins which altogether are highly beneficial.
Also known as bladder wrack or bladderwack, it is a seaweed found on the coasts of North Sea, western Baltic Sea and the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. The main ingredients of this plant include mucilage, algin, mannitol, beta-carotene, zeaxanthin, bromine, potassium, iodine and many other minerals. It was also the initial source of discovered iodine in 1811, an essential mineral which supports thyroid function, mammary gland development and foetal and infant growth, with strong alkalasing and antioxidant effects.
The main use of bladderwrack in medicine is its high iodine content, proven to be helpful in treatment of under-active thyroid glands (hypothyroidism) and goitre. Also, iodine proved to be useful in women with abnormal menstrual cycling patterns and menstrual-related disease histories.
Researches from Newcastle University, UK, showed that seaweed not only proves to be helpful in weight management1, but also has antioxidants capacities comparable with those of fruit and vegetables. It was also demonstrated that seaweed's antioxidant capacity is still available in the gut after enzymatic digestion. The research has also concluded that Seagreens®
Derived from plankton and a blue-green micro-algae, spirulina is a nutritious food, containing 18 amino-acids, including 8 essential ones, which the body cannot produce from its own resources and needs to be supplemented from food. It is also rich in beta-carotene, vitamin E, vitamin F, iron, protein, vitamin and minerals. 100g of spirulina yields 50%-70% protein, with high levels of vitamin B12 as well. The high B12 content of Spirulina is of high interest to vegans and vegetarians and non-meat eaters who may be deficient in this important vitamin.
A single-cell marine algae, contains more chlorophyll than many known foods, vitamin B12, beta-carotene, polyunsaturated fatty acids and 19 amino acids. It is also a natural source of calcium, iron, selenium and zinc. It provides useful detoxification, as it can bind with pesticides (PCBs), heavy metals, which can accumulate in the human body. It is a fibrous material, supporting healthy digestion, has a cleansing action on the bowel and other elimination organs, as well as liver protection, it helps to keep the blood free from metabolites and promotes a strong immune system.
Traditionally used in herbal treatments as a supportive treatment for liver and efficient digestive system functioning, artichoke contains cynarin, a compound now used for several decades to lower the elevated blood lipids (high cholesterol and triglycerides), increasing at the same time the serum levels of HDL levels (good lipids). This offers great prevention support of heart disease and liver cleansing. It was also reported by Japanese researchers that artichoke can increase the production of bile by the liver, which in turn can break down fat.
Green tea is a rich source of catechin polyphenols and EGCG, powerful antioxidants and active ingredients with beneficial health properties. Studies have shown that green tea polyphenols have a stronger antioxidant action than vitamin C and vitamin E, powerful antioxidants as well. Green tea can be an adjunct in weight loss as well, as polyphenols are thought to induce thermogenesis and stimulate fat oxidation.
Anthraquinones and tannins are contained in rhubarb rhizomes — appreciated by the Chinese herbalists, as they act as mild stimulant laxatives and astringents. Rhubarb is also acting as a mild stimulant of oestrogen production, therefore it is of good value for menopause and oestrogen deficiency. It also contains dietary fibre, poly-phenolic antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. It is also rich in several B-complex vitamins such as folates, riboflavin, niacin, vitamin B6 (pyridoxine), thiamin and pantothenic acid, but also minerals such as iron, copper, calcium, potassium, phosphorus. It is also rich in vitamin K, which is great for bone health, promoting bone formation and growth processes.
Bright red ripe pods, known also as cayenne pepper, it is a great stimulating herb improving the blood circulation in the tissues, producing natural warmth, helping to settle the circulation in the elderly people. It is also accelerating the oxygenation of the cells, has an antiseptic action, anti-spasmodic and carminative. It is highly suitable for people with a feeble constitution, poor circulation and low energy levels. Supports digestion, reduces wind and promotes gastro-intestinal secretions, improving appetite.
