Gut-Buddies Infantis is a probiotic powder that contains 7 strains of naturally-occurring beneficial organisms (including the child-specific Bifidobacterium infantis strain and FOS). It represents a tasteless powder, in easy-to-use sachets, it is safe for all ages and was designed to support healthy levels of intestinal flora after a course of antibiotics or following a digestive upset. It is also offering immune support when toddlers or young children return to playgroups or pre-school. This is a risk period, as the child will contact with different strains of germs and viruses. Below, we will outline the main benefits of this probiotic:

  • Supports healthy levels of intestinal flora
  • Stimulates and protects the immune system
  • Replenishes a disrupted gut
  • Promotes the mechanism of competitive exclusion against pathogenic bacteria
  • Improves intestinal digestion

Gut-Buddies Infantis ingredients explained

Gut-Buddies Infantis contains both prebiotics and probiotics. These are not to be confused, as they represent different things. The probiotics are friendly bacteria that help maintain the natural balance of organisms in the intestines. On the other hand, the prebiotics are a source of food which help probiotics grow.

Probiotics, the friendly bacteria that help maintain the natural balance of organisms in the intestines, are in fact competing for food with the harmful for human body organisms that would otherwise make people sick if allowed to flourish and grow in large numbers. The symbiosis between the human intestine and these micro-organisms helps us digest food, absorb proteins, produce B group vitamins and support the immune system. It also helps protecting the gut wall and help preventing the more harmful organisms from establishing themselves.

A happy tummy means a happy baby A wide range of factors such as illness or antibiotics (which destroy both good and bad bacteria) can disrupt the healthy gut flora and children are particularly susceptible to such disruptions. Most probiotics are live micro-organisms that are similar to those naturally found in the gut and Gut-Buddies Infantis is no exception — it is a multi-strain probiotic supplement designed specially for children. It contains the Bifidobacterium infantis strain, a child-specific probiotic strain and in also comes in a easy-to-administer tasteless powder form which can be added to any liquid. It provides 1 billion live bacteria per sachet and the parents can rest assured that their children's vulnerable tummies will get replenished with a variety of beneficial flora. The entire range of friendly bacteria occurring in Gut-Buddies Infantis supplement are naturally found in the digestive tracts of children.

In other words, prebiotics are fibres, which cannot be absorbed in the gut or broken down by the body and serve as a support for the beneficial bacteria like the Bifidobacterium strains, to grow and multiply in order to improve digestion and intestinal function. Prebiotics are not alive as the bacteria in probiotics, they just are an environment for the beneficial gut bacteria to grow and develop. The mix between pro and prebiotics is called a synbiosis. The prebiotic included in the Gut-Buddies Infantis formula is named FOS and is used for many years in the dietary supplements industry. It serves as a substrate for the microflora in the large intestine, increasing the overall intestinal tract health and also used as supplement for preventing yeast infections.
Some studies have also found that calcium absorption could be stimulated by Fructooligosacharides (FOS). Also, prebiotics like FOS are fermented in the gut and they help reducing the pH, making the environment more acidic and therefore more susceptible for the Calcium to get freed from the food and move into the bloodstream.

A little bit more about the benefits of probiotics

Fighting AAD — Antibiotic-associated diarrhoea

Antibiotics, when taken, will indiscriminately destroy all the bacteria, including the friendly ones in the gut. Probiotics are needed in such situations to help restore the digestion-related side effects of antibiotics (such as constipation, wind, cramping and diarrhoea). Probiotic treatment can reduce the incidence and severity of AAD, restore the imbalance in the colon and restore the healthy digestive processes.

Improving immune system and preventing infections

The immune system is tightly connected to the digestive tract and it was established that there are anti-body producing cells in the intestine, named GALT (Gut Associated Lymphoid Tissue) which modulate the immune response of the entire organism. Altering the balance of the intestinal flora could also alter the immune system response and defence.

A 2010 study outlined the possibility of the probiotic therapies to be beneficial for preventing the secondary infections, a common complication of the antibiotic therapy. It was suggested that the antibiotic therapy could be the cause for keeping the immune system in "off" mode and only after probiotics were included in the diet, the immune system will start to become responsive again and switch to "idle", making the immune response much more efficient and faster. Lactic Acid Bacteria (LAB) foods and supplements have been shown to aid in the treatment and prevention of acute diarrhoea and decreasing the severity and duration of rotavirus infections in children and travellers' diarrhoea in adults.

Improving mineral absorption

It has been established that the probiotic lactobacilli can help to correct malabsorption of trace minerals, found particularly in the individuals with diets high in phytate content from whole grains, nuts, legumes.

Reducing inflammation

LAB have been found to modulate the inflammatory and hypersensitivity responses. Clinical studies suggest that they can prevent recurrences of inflammatory bowel disease in adults, as well as help to improve the milk allergies.

Preventing harmful bacterial growth under stress

A study done to make a link between the effects of stress on intestinal flora proved that the animals that were fed with probiotics experienced a lower occurrence of harmful bacteria in their intestines than those that were fed sterile water.

Lowering cholesterol

Studies proved the effectiveness of a range of LAB in decreasing the cholesterol levels. It is considered that this could occur due to the fact that they have a role in breaking the bile in the gut thereby inhibiting its re-absorption into the bloodstream as cholesterol.

Lowering blood pressure

Clinical tries have indicated a link between the consumption of milk fermented products with various strains of LAB (Lactic Acid Bacilli) and that a reduction into the blood pressure could have been notices. It is thought that this effect id due to the ACE inhibitor-like peptides produced during the fermentation. This is not an effect we would expect to be beneficial in children and the amount of LAB in Gut-Buddies Infantis would induce a decrease of blood pressure only if there would be a tendency of its increase in the first place.

IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) and colitis

Certain probiotics are considered to be improving the symptoms of IBS and ulcerative colitis.
